The art of mind control
Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts. Never say anything that isn't true. Have nothing to do with lies and misleading words. Look straight ahead with honest confidence; don't hang your head in shame. Plan carefully what you do, and whatever you do will turn out right. Avoid evil and walk straight ahead. Don't go one step off the right way. Proverbs 4 : 23 - 27 (GNB) |
We discover in this week's passage that your thoughts have a much larger impact on your life than you probably give them credit for! Everything you do, or strive to do starts off as a thought in the back of your mind, and with time develops into your actions.
What we also find in this passage is that we need to be careful of what thoughts we allow to take up residence in our heads. Although there is great potential for good, God filled thoughts to flourish, there is also potential for not so good ones as well.
We don't want to allow any bad thoughts to stay in our minds. As if they are left unchecked these too will develop and grow, and like most things the more established something becomes the harder it is to get rid of it.
Just think of your mind as a garden. It is pretty easy to get rid of a weed while it is still a seed, or little shoot. However once it has established into a tree or bush it will be much harder to extract, as its roots have buried themselves deep into the soil.
We are encouraged that the best way to shape our lives the way that God wants is to always tell the truth. Always focus on what is good, and not to give bad things around us a single moment of our attention.
The passage tells us to be confident when we are working towards things we know to be good. Also on the flip-side we shouldn't dwell on our mistakes or let them get us down. The key thing is focus and self-control! We need to focus on what is good while at the same time avoiding the distractions of everything else around us. Have a good week, and remember your mind is powerful so make sure you keep it under control!
