Do it anyway

So the priests blew the trumpets. As soon as the people heard it, they gave a loud shout, and the walls collapsed. Then all the army went straight up the hill into the city and captured it.

Joshua 6 : 20 (GNB)

Our passage this week is a great example of God's people following his instructions even when on the face of it they seem totally bonkers. We also see God honouring the promises that he has given and providing a seemingly impossible solution at just the right time.

Earlier on in this passage we find God telling Joshua that he will overthrow the city of Jericho. Jericho was a heavily defended fortress city. A city which appeared to be impenetrable to Joshua and the rest of his nation, Israel.

However God also gave Joshua some instructions on how to achieve this goal... March the army around the city once a day for six days and on the seventh day march around seven times with the priests sounding their trumpets and the people shouting at the top of their voices. On each occasion the Covenant Box containing God's promises was to lead the procession, carried by Israel's priests.

To me this seems more like a fitness plan than a strategy for taking over a city, and I am sure many of the Israelites felt the same. However the important thing is that despite how futile it seemed in their own strength they trusted God and did it anyway. Joshua and his people showed true trust in God, in return God released his power doing the impossible, turning the impenetrable walls of Jericho into rubble.

Today God might not be intending for us to take over a city, but he will be intending for you to do something equally amazing. The important thing is that no matter what God asks us to do, no matter how unlikely success might seem we do it anyway. Have a great week.

This week's song is Let it be known by Worship Central.
