Living it is better than thinking it
For I tell you that Christ's life of service was on behalf of the Jews, to show that God is faithful, to make his promises to their ancestors come true. Romans 15 : 8 (GNB) |
This week we are going to think about the importance of living God's plans rather than just learning about them. God has always intended for his word, the Bible to spur on action. Right from the dawn of time his word has brought life into our world (and brought the world into being).
God's word isn't intended to simply be a history book. Simply detailing the exploits of God and his people in the past. Neither is it meant to purely be an academic text for students and scholars to learn and discuss deep theological theories but never put to any practical use. God's word is alive and is intended to bring life and trigger action within our lives.
This is demonstrated by Jesus in our passage this week. He shows that the best way to respond to God's word is through action. Note that the passage doesn't say that Jesus came to tell the Jews how faithful God is but instead says that he came to show them.
At first glance this only seems minor but the difference between telling and showing is very significant. Telling someone about a topic (which in this case is the faithfulness of God) is pretty passive. Where as living in a way which shows or demonstrates it through your behaviour is a far more active option.
Jesus' example of sharing God's word through actions as well as words is a lifestyle that we should try and follow. We should see God's word as being something that we can live out rather than cram in.
This week think about how you are living out God's word. See if there is any thoughts or knowledge in your mind that is ready to be turned into action. Have a great week.
