Mankind's new clothes
The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. Genesis 3 : 21 (NIVUK) |
This one little passage is taken from the account of Adam and Eve while they were in the Garden of Eden. This is just after the pair chose to eat the forbidden fruit which resulted in their lives falling apart. For the first time due to ignoring God's instructions they felt shame, fear and embarrassment. They had one simple rule to follow and they had blown it.
So what did God do? Did he zap them off the face of the Earth? No. Did he turn his back and ignore them? Again, no. God punished them both, but he did not give up on them. They were exiled from the garden, they no longer had access to the easy life that they were accustom to. However, God did still provide and care for them.
As we see in this passage God provided both Adam and Eve with clothes, to cover their nakedness and relieve their shame. At first glance, God providing clothes may not seem like anything out of the ordinary, after all, we are all used to just popping down to the shops to get a new outfit whenever we feel like it. However, if you think about it a bit deeper there is so much more being represented in this one little passage. Firstly it shows us that God is still loving and still willing to provide for us even when mess up and do things wrong. Secondly by the clothes being made of animal skin it shows that even from the very beginning, way before Jesus came to Earth God, was willing to make sacrifices to make good the actions in our lives to sustain a relationship between us and him.
This week if something doesn't go to plan or you feel that you have not lived up to the expectations that God has for you don't get upset. Remember that God always has a plan to help us get back on track. All we need to do is turn to him for help. Have a great week.
