Remembering your reflection
Whoever listens to the word but does not put it into practice is like a man who looks in a mirror and sees himself as he is. He takes a good look at himself and then goes away and at once forgets what he looks like. James 1 : 23 - 24 (GNB) |
Our passage this week is telling us that being a follower of Jesus is not meant to be a passive activity. Although listening to or reading God's word is good, that alone is not good enough.
You might read your Bible every day, you might attend church services every Sunday, week after week without fail. However if you don't put what you have heard and what you have read into practice your time has been wasted.
Just like simply a travel magazine does not jet you off to tropical lands, or just staring at a recipe card will not cause you to become a master chef or a make a delicious cake suddenly materialise.
For these to happen you need to actually do something, to arrive on a tropical island you need to start off by buying a plane ticket. To have a delicious cake you need to start by mixing the ingredients (or if you are as bad a cook as me going out and visiting a bakery). The key point being you need to make a leap from knowing to doing.
So back to remembering your reflection. It all starts by becoming active to capture the moment to carry with you when you walk away, maybe that could be a sketch or a quick selfie, something more than just looking. Something that you can take away with you when you leave the mirror behind.
This week think about how active you are for God. Have you settled for just listening when there is so much more to be done? Don't let your reflection fade away into your memory, take action and equip yourself, be active and remember your reflection. Have a great week.
