The bakery in the desert
After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry. Then the Devil came to him and said, “If you are God’s son, order these stones to turn into bread.” But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word that God speaks.’” Matthew 4 : 2 - 4 (GNB) |
Today's verse may at first have a resemblance of a conjuring trick, with a David Blaine type vibe. However, there are no glass boxes, trickery or public spectacle involved here.
Jesus's feat is impressive, going without food for a day or so is bad enough but 40, that is really taking it to another level. I think that when Matthew said Jesus was hungry it is a bit of an understatement!
This aspect of the story however is not the key bit to focus on. The second half of the passage is key. Despite Jesuss hunger (we are talking about real hunger not just feeling a bit peckish). Jesus stood his ground when the Devil tried to knock him off track.
Having the strength to say no that is not right! to the Devils trickery. No matter how appealing or seemingly harmless it may appear. This is the point to remember from this passage.
It would have been so easy for Jesus to have said "youre right, I'm starving what harm could it possibly do?" Which could have in effect changed the entire course of history! Who knows what could have happened if Jesus had let the Devil "bend his ear" on this occasion. Just think about it the son of God taking advice from the devil! The main thing is that he didn't and that is exactly what we should be doing too!
You might not be facing extreme hunger like Jesus was in this passage, but maybe there is something that feels just as bad. Whatever it may be dont get disheartened and get fooled by evil trickery, instead hold your ground and trust in God!
Today be strong and follow what you know to be right, rather than what is easy! This is bound to reap better rewards in the end! Have a great week!
This weeks song is Overcommer by Mandisa. I feel that song is a great fit for this weeks theme. It reminds us that even when bad stuff or temptation strikes with God we can overcome it! |
