Unleash the power
Believers will be given the power to perform miracles: they will drive out demons in my name; they will speak in strange tongues; if they pick up snakes or drink any poison, they will not be harmed; they will place their hands on sick people, who will get well. Mark 16 : 17 - 18 (GNB) |
Are you excited by today's passage? Here we are being told by Jesus himself that those who believe in him will be given super awesome super powers from God. Powers that no human naturally has, the power to do miracles (impossible feats).
We are talking about awesome feats or skills that are well out of the ordinary. Skills that do not feature on your typical CV. Over the years I have seen many CVs, I have seen some pretty ambitious claims, but nothing like the ones God has given us. Skills such as driving out demons, speaking Godly languages you have never learnt or healing the sick with a simple touch.
The collection of powers mentioned in this passage are significant. They are not just a mixed bag of Godly curiosities. All of these powers are practical tools. Tools that will help you live out the purpose that God has prepared for you.
Firstly there are tools to help you care for those around you, allowing you to tend to both their spiritual and physical needs. We can do this through driving out ungodly spirits, and healing the sick. These reflect God's desire for us to love our communities.
Secondly there are tools to help you with your communication with God. This demonstrates God's intention to be in relationship with us. A relationship that can only flourish through regular dialogue. He gives us the power to speak in Godly languages, in tongues.
Finally, God gives us power that will enable us to thrive, showing us how God will keep us safe from harm. He also tells us that he will do great things, even perform miracles, through us when we trust in him.
This week remember that God has given you access to great power, which he is just waiting for you to choose to unleash. Have a great week.
