What are you good at?
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4 : 10 (NIVUK) |
There are many examples in the Bible where God uses our weaknesses as a starting point for doing great things, such as Moses who was sent to stand up to Pharoh and lead his nation out of captivity, despite his shy nature. The little shepherd boy David, who killed a giant despite being a bit of a weakling. Paul, who led the newly established church, despite the significant handicap of being in prison. In all of these cases and countless others, the weaknesses of the individuals forced them to rely heavily on God to succeed.
The passage we have today is slightly different. We are encouraged to use our strengths, our talents, the things that we are good at to achieve the purposes that God has prepared for us. Even when we do use our talents, like those who fully out of their comfort zone we do not need to do it alone. We can still depend on God for a helping hand along the way.
Whether God is calling you to do something that you are good at or something completely new there is one vital step that you must do... Start! Our faith in God must be more than theory, more than a quiet prayer alone in your bedroom, in your small group or in church. God calls us to use our strengths and our weaknesses, not just think and pray about them.
This week think about your strengths and your weaknesses, ask God how you can use them, then take the leap and use them for God. It doesn't need to be anything big. Your first step could be as simple as volunteering on a team at church. Have a great week.
