What is the source?
Where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is also disorder and every kind of evil. But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. James 3 : 16 - 17 (GNB) |
For many people the origin of items, whether that is food, drink or other goods can be very important. From determining the source it is possible to estimate its benefit or quality. For example a bottle of bubbly from Champagne will be more highly valued than a similar bottle from Croydon, simply because of it's origin and the benefits associated with that particular location.
We see this week that there are many sources that we draw from in our lives, and we have a choice in which ones we pick. The sources that we choose will have a significant impact over our behaviour and ultimately the type of person that we will become.
The first source we are told of is the "me-centred" source of jealousy and selfishness. Although at first glance this can seem to be a desirable option, after all it is the option that humans are naturally drawn to. Putting ourselves first, striving to push ourselves forward and be the best. We find however that this source can cause some nasty side effects. These include wickedness, disorder and every kind of evil. Therefore it is probably worth looking at the other source that we can draw on in our lives.
The second option is the "God-centred" source, which brings wisdom and peace. This source does not have the same nasty side effects and instead provides a sustainable supply of wisdom, peace and compassion. It may not bring the same short-term indulgence offered by the first option, and may take a bit of getting used to but is definitely the more reliable option in the longer term.
So which source are you using to power your life? Have you chosen the God centred source producing long term wisdom and peace? Or are you still settling for me-centred option which may bring short-term enjoyment, but longer lasting side effects. Have a great week.
